Black Vs. Gold Boxes: popularity or rarity?

The black box era was, and still is the weakest of the Nike SB era.

Think about the success the Silver and Pink boxes had in comparison to the Black boxes. Now that we're into the Gold box era, it's easy to see that Nike has realized the lack of demand post-black box.

Because of this lack of demand, they've since (and this is all speculation) stepped up the amount of releases with ACTUAL limited amounts. The Skate or Dies! were simply a 'Pro' release, yet they are by far the most expensive, hardest to find (Dunk SB) gold box thus far. Speaking of hard to find, other releases (Donatello's, and now Piet's and Thrashin's) are becoming harder and harder to come across upon release. In contrast, the black box era releases seemed flooded, readily available, and in general underwhelming.

Perhaps it's that the gold box (Dunk SB's) are more appealing. Better designs, better materials, and perhaps more hype has increased the demand, and thus made it harder to find basic releases. Maybe they're not actually releases lesser numbers of a certain shoe, but perhaps the popularity of the SB Dunk has decreased the chance of getting a pair on release day.

So... is it that Nike IS choosing to release them in fewer numbers, or do people want SB Dunks that much more?

It'd be interesting to hear anyone's thoughts...

i believe it's a bit to hard & kind of useless to compare all the boxes. I can look at the start of SBs til 2004 & maybe pick out 5 or 6 things i like.
every year everything has ramped up. hardly any of the last year releases clutter up clearance shelves, so interest is through the roof for SB.now of course i am talking about everything & not just the Dunk releases.
i think its harder to get stuff now because demand is higher than quantity, which Nike probablt ramps up every year. new shops are popping up every other day. new people sign up to NSB every hour. if your sick of your boring footlocker shoes, finding something crazy awesome is just a google search away.
also take into account how many people got opened up to exclusive sneakers when Pee Wees & Freddy dunks hit every blog about anything remotely nerdy or horror movie centric.

i think its just that people want stuff now that had no clue what an SB was until the end of the black box prime example was the MF dooms ... dose not bother me im willing to drive up to like 3 hrs to get something i want.

Popularity is growing BECAUSE they're being released in fewer numbers.
Especially now, we see how far a person is willing to go (how much they'll pay!!!) to be one of the few who own a certain pair of shoes.
The only thing the colour of the boxes represents is time, during which nike was still evolving into what it is today. (cult-like followings, rabid sneaker collectors, people camping out for new releases ect.)
so its both. popularity has grown because of the skateboard culture that sbs were tied to, and because of the smart marketing game nike played (supply&demand).
The designs havent gotten any better. it's hardly about the design anyway, it's about who's getting paid to endorse the brand, who's wearing the brand, and who's supplying the brand.
